Long Rest Debate

Post by Shizen Ikari on Mon Oct 05, 2015 6:11 am

I've dug through forums and I've seen two people argue tooth and nail for either side, so I'll need DM final judgement on this. It involves the Trance ability of elves, and the Long Rest. If an elf trances for 4 hours, do they get the benefit of the extended rest? Both Trance, and Long rest are listed below for refrence.

The main arguing point if this sentence in Trance.

After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a
human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Same benefit of someone that slept for full 8 hours, thus that would incenuate a long rest. However, in long rest it states the following.

A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least 8
hours long, during which a character sleeps or performs
light activity: reading, talking, eating, or standing watch
for no more than 2 hours.

With the first sentence it denotes a timeline of 8 hours of downtime needed, with sleeping being optional. So they conflict, Trance grants 8 hours of sleep in 4 and its benefits, yet long rest needs 8 solid hours, as short rest needs 1. So it's very iffy and I'll accept the ruling either way, though I'd prefer it if I got the full benefit of an extended rest in 4 hours lol

Long Rest:

Long Rest

A long rest is a period o f extended downtime, at least 8
hours long, during which a character sleeps or performs
light activity: reading, talking, eating, or standing watch
for no more than 2 hours. If the rest is interrupted by a
period o f strenuous activity—at least 1 hour o f walking,
fighting, casting spells, or similar adventuring activity—
the characters must begin the rest again to gain any
benefit from it.

At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost
hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up
to a number o f dice equal to half o f the character’s total
number o f them. For example, if a character has eight
Hit Dice, he or she can regain four spent Hit Dice upon
finishing a long rest.

A character can’t benefit from more than one long rest
in a 24-hour period, and a character must have at least
1 hit point at the start o f the rest to gain its benefits.

Trance:

Trance:

Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they
meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4
hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation
is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a
fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that
have become reflexive through years of practice. After
resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a
human does from 8 hours o f sleep.

I always considered it the same thing...sleep and long rest. I always thought during the long red most of it would be sleep and the last hour or so would be preparing spells, fixing armor, etc.

Perfect, then I'll just mark down Trance being able to give me my spell slots back after 4 hours. Since Trance cuts long rests in half, would you have it by default cut short rests in half so I can meditate for 30 mins opposed to an hour and rejuvinate my body to the point of healing and recovering wild shapes?
